Recovery is possible, and you don't have to do it alone
Whether it's alcohol, drugs, betting or something else, every day you choose recovery counts. Slips can happen; what matters is getting back up.
Understanding it
Addiction isn't a lack of willpower. Substances and habits like betting change how the brain responds to stress and reward, which is why stopping can feel so hard.
Recovery usually means more than stopping. It's learning what pulls you back, building a life you don't want to escape from, and having people around you who understand.
You might notice
- Needing more to get the same feeling
- Promising to cut down, then not managing to
- Hiding how much you use or bet
- Money, work, school or relationships suffering
- Feeling restless or unwell when you stop
What helps
- 01
Know your triggers
People, places, feelings or times of day that set off cravings. Track them in your journal.
- 02
Remember HALT
Cravings are stronger when you're Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired. Deal with those first.
- 03
Change the routine
Avoid the places and people linked to using or betting, especially early on.
- 04
Lean on others
A recovery group or a trusted friend you can call when a craving hits.
- 05
Count your days
Celebrate every substance-free or bet-free day. Small wins add up.
- 06
Get professional help
Stopping some substances suddenly can be dangerous. A doctor can help you do it safely.
Try this now
Surf the urge
- When a craving hits, don't fight it or give in. Just notice it.
- Rate it from 1 to 10.
- Breathe slowly and picture the craving as a wave: it rises, peaks and falls.
- Wait ten minutes. Drink some water or step outside.
- Rate it again. Most cravings pass in 20 to 30 minutes.
