Understand your moods, one day at a time
Every feeling carries information. Naming what you feel and noticing what sets it off is the first step to feeling steadier.
Understanding it
Moods rise and fall for everyone. Sleep, food, stress, hormones, the people around us and the stories we tell ourselves all play a part.
When low, anxious or angry days start to outnumber the good ones, it helps to look for patterns. That is what the mood calendar is for: a colour a day soon shows you what your weeks are really like.
You might notice
- Feeling on edge, irritable or tearful more often
- Losing interest in things you used to enjoy
- Racing thoughts that make it hard to switch off
- Sleeping or eating much more, or much less
- Pulling away from friends and family
What helps
- 01
Name it to tame it
Putting a feeling into words, even just "I feel anxious", calms the part of the brain that sounds the alarm.
- 02
Move your body
A ten-minute walk, a stretch or a dance in the kitchen can shift a heavy mood.
- 03
Look after the basics
Regular sleep, meals and water make emotions easier to handle.
- 04
Talk to someone
A friend, a group or a professional. You don't have to carry it alone.
- 05
Limit the doom-scroll
Notice which apps and news leave you feeling worse, and take a break from them.
- 06
Notice the good
Write down one thing that went well each day, however small.
Try this now
The 3-minute check-in
- Stop and take three slow breaths.
- Ask yourself: what am I feeling right now? Find the most accurate word.
- Where do you feel it in your body? Your chest, stomach, shoulders?
- What might have triggered it?
- What is one small, kind thing you can do for yourself next?
